Gloucester County VINE Coverage
New Jersey VINE through VINELink is a free, confidential custody-notification service for crime victims and other concerned people. Official New Jersey material describes participation by county jails and state correctional facilities. That makes VINE useful for a Gloucester County record even though the county closed its residential jail. Gloucester arrestees first enter Salem County Correctional Facility, then may move to Atlantic County Justice Facility, Essex County Correctional Facility, NJDOC, or another verified holder after classification. The VINE record may therefore name the actual facility rather than Gloucester County.
VINE has two related functions. It lets someone search for a selected person and read the custody event supplied by a participating agency. It also lets a user register for later notices. Access is available through VINELink, the official mobile app, telephone at 1-877-846-3465, and TTY at 1-866-847-1298. A VINE event is faster than waiting for a formal record response, but it is not the same as the jail’s full movement log. VINE publishes no guaranteed historical retention period for a person’s record.
Coverage limit: New Jersey VINE covers participating county and state custody. It does not cover BOP, ICE, or U.S. Marshals custody.
When federal or immigration custody is indicated, use that authority’s system. A missing VINE result does not prove release. The name may differ, the agency may update later, the record may no longer be searchable, or the person may be in a system outside VINE.
Search Gloucester County VINE
Start with enough identity detail to separate the intended person from similar names. The New Jersey interface supports name and date-of-birth information or an SBI identifier. An SBI number is the State Bureau of Identification number tied to a New Jersey record. Gloucester County is the case or arrest county, but the facility line may show Salem or a later receiving jail. Do not reject a likely match solely because the location is outside Gloucester.

- Compare every candidate with the known identity details before opening a record.
- Read the current location and exact event label. Keep “release” separate from “transfer,” “out to court,” and “unsupervised custody.”

The official Gloucester County Classification Unit says all Gloucester arrestees are admitted to Salem County Jail and may be transferred after processing. This is why the location field matters. A transfer from Salem to Atlantic or Essex continues custody. A transfer into NJDOC also continues custody, even though the person is no longer in the county-jail channel.

Read Gloucester County VINE Events
VINE reports custody changes, not a legal summary of the full case. New Jersey event types include release, transfer, escape, return from escape, unsupervised custody, out to court, DOC parole actions, and death. Each label has a distinct meaning. “Released” is the event of interest, but the responsible agency’s record should still establish its date, type, and destination. “Transfer” means another custodian took charge. “Out to court” records a temporary departure for a court event and may be followed by either a return or a lawful release.

A VINE result is also different from an NJDOC sentence record. NJDOC’s Date Out-of-Custody is the historical state-prison release field while the record remains online. VINE can alert on the custody change, while NJDOC supplies the state sentence fields. Neither should be relabeled as a Salem jail release unless the identity and movement sequence support that conclusion.

Register Gloucester County Release Alerts
Notification begins from the matching in-custody record, not from a general county list. The current New Jersey VINE brochure says phone, text, mobile app, email, and TTY are available. Each method must be registered separately. Registering more than one route may help when one device is unavailable, but each entry must remain current.

- Select each wanted method separately, such as phone, text, app, email, or TTY.
- Enter and confirm the contact details requested by the interface.
- For telephone notice, create a memorable four-digit PIN.
- When a VINE call arrives, hear the message and enter the PIN followed by the number sign.
- After any alert, verify the reported event with the agency that held the person.
Entering the telephone PIN confirms receipt and stops repeat calls until another custody change. A 24-hour operator can assist with PIN reset or cancellation. Registration remains confidential under the service description. Still, an alert is a prompt to check the source record. It is not a court disposition, a full release record, or a promise that a planned event occurred exactly as first reported.
Gloucester VINE Court-Trip Alerts
Gloucester County has a documented local VINE history. The statewide rollout report recorded 250 Gloucester registrations in 2005. The number is historical, but it confirms that VINE is a real local notification layer for a county whose prisoners may be held elsewhere. Current use is especially practical because the same person can pass through Salem intake and a later partner facility without ever occupying a Gloucester County jail building.
Attorney General Directive 2005-5 adds an important local reading rule. A jail-to-municipal-court event means departure from the jail for court and only a possible later release to the community. Court staff may issue or process an order, while the holding jail creates the physical movement entry. Those two records answer different questions. Do not treat the first alert as the last step.
If VINE says “out to court,” wait for the next reported event or contact the actual holding jail. If a later entry says release, ask for the movement record when firm historical proof is needed. If the person returns to the jail, no community release occurred during that trip.
Gloucester VINE Record Requests
Verification depends on the custody path. For a Gloucester county case handled at Salem, request Salem’s booking and movement entry. Ask for the actual date and time out of custody, release or movement type, and destination or receiving agency. Gloucester Corrections may hold related classification, transport, time-credit, or discharge material. If the person was transferred to Atlantic or Essex, follow the named receiving facility instead of calling the move a release.
When the record holder is uncertain, use a two-custodian request. The Salem County OPRA portal is the route for a jail record held by Salem. The Gloucester County OPRA form reaches Gloucester-held classification, transport, and discharge material. Identify the person by full name, aliases, birth date if known, and any booking, case, commitment, or SBI number. Ask for the existing movement or release entry, its date and time, the event type, and the destination. Also ask the office to identify the correct custodian when it does not hold the record.
Verify Gloucester County VINE Results
The Gloucester criminal case supplies a different part of the answer. Promis/Gavel public access and the Vicinage 15 records route may show the order, disposition, or sentence linked to the custody change. A dismissal or release order does not by itself record the hour a person left the jail. In the same way, VINE’s custody alert does not explain the full case outcome. Match the court identifier to the jail or NJDOC record before treating the events as one sequence.
For a state-prison sentence, use the NJDOC Offender Search and read Current Facility, Date In-Custody, Date Out-of-Custody, Current Max Release Date, and Current Parole Eligibility Date by their exact labels. For a federal sentence, use BOP. For immigration detention, use ICE. VINE does not join those separate systems into one record.
